9v Lithium Batteries
The 9v lithium battery is one of several 9v battery variants. Examples of other commonly used 9v batteries are the alkaline 9v battery, the NiCd 9v battery and the NiMH 9v battery. The 9v lithium battery is also known as the PP3 lithium battery and follows the ANSI standard 1604A. (ANSI stands for American National Standards Institute.) The dimensions for this type of battery are 48 millimetres × 25 millimetres × 15 millimetres (1.9 inches ×1 inches × 0.6 inches).
The 9v lithium battery can be used to replace the 9v alkaline battery in most appliances. It is especially popular in high-demanding devices since it has a longer life-span and a higher capacity compared to the alkaline variants.
The 9v lithium battery is often used in high power applications. Lithium batteries containing lithium-thionyl chloride are especially prone to very rapid discharging when short-circuited. Most consumer batteries, including the 9v lithium battery produced for the consumer market, will however feature overcurrent protection, thermal protection or vents which dramatically reduces the risk of explosion even when the batteries are short-circuited.
